Description
The building at numbers 37 and 37A, Devonshire Place, Brighton, is a synagogue dating to around 1825. It was originally constructed as a synagogue, alongside numbers 38 and 39, and was enlarged in 1837 to include a residence and schoolroom, a project overseen by David Mocatta. Restoration work is currently underway, including rebuilding the first-floor verandah. The building is constructed of stucco, with the roof concealed behind a parapet. It is three storeys high, with a basement. The facade has a three-window range. The entrance is flat-arched, with an overlight, and to the right are two flat-arched windows with projecting sills. The ground floor features chamfered rustication. A first-floor balcony is present, with cast-iron railings in a Gothic Revival style, featuring intersecting ogee arches with quatrefoil borders. A storey band is positioned between the first and second floors. The windows are sash windows, retaining some original glazing, particularly in the ground floor and two basement windows which are camber arched and have deep reveals. The building has a cornice and parapet, along with stacks to the party walls. The interior has not been inspected. Railings are present at the stairs and area. The synagogue was originally designed to accommodate 50 people.
