Description

Numbers 76 to 80, including Number 77A, are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1840, located on Montpelier Road in Brighton. They are constructed of stucco, with slate roofs to numbers 77A and 78; the remaining roofs are hidden behind parapets. The houses are three storeys high over a basement, with number 79 having an additional attic storey. Each house features a full-height, full-width segmental bay across the front. All windows have flat arches. Steps lead to flat-arched entrances with overlights, and the ground floor is decorated with banded rustication. First-floor windows have architraves and individual cast-iron balconettes with palm-leaf and Greek fret ornament. A storey band separates the first and second floors, with further architraves to the second-floor windows. A dentil cornice runs along the top, though this detail is missing from number 77A. The houses are topped by a balustraded parapet, which is absent from numbers 77A and 78. The party walls have stacks. Number 78 and 79 retain panelled doors of original design. Original sash windows remain in numbers 76, 78, and 79; number 76 has windows of 6x6 panes to the ground floor, 9x9 to the first floor, and 6x3 to the second. Number 79 has 9x9 panes to the first floor and 6x3 to the second. Blind boxes are present on the first floor of number 78 and on all floors of number 79. The interior was not inspected. Fragments of cast-iron railings, featuring crescent-shaped finials, remain at numbers 77 and 79. The railings contribute to the group value of these properties.
