Description

Numbers 18-24 are a group of early 19th-century terraced houses, many of which have been converted into guest houses, located on New Steine in Brighton. The facades are stuccoed, with varying roof materials: slate on numbers 20 and 21, tile on number 24, and parapets on the remainder.

The houses are arranged over four storeys with a basement, with numbers 20 and 21 featuring dormers. Each property has two windows, with paired flat-arched entrances, each featuring an overlight. The entrances to numbers 18-19, 20-21, and 22-23 are framed by fluted pilasters topped by console brackets and a cornice, supporting a segmental pediment with a raking cornice and a tympanum decorated with a sunburst mirroring the design of numbers 2-15 nearby. The entrance to number 24 has a flat arch framed by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. Each property has a full-height bay window featuring tripartite windows with flat arches. Most bays are canted, with number 19 exhibiting a segmental bay to the basement and ground floor, canted above. Number 24’s bay has attached colonnettes dating to the mid-19th century. Balconies with cast-iron brackets are present on the first-floor bay windows of numbers 18-20 and 22-23, except for number 19. A mid-to-late 19th century veranda with wooden uprights, ornamentation, and cast-iron railings is present at number 21, while number 24 has a veranda with cast-iron railings. Storey bands are visible on numbers 18-19, and stringcourses on numbers 20-24. A cornice and blocking course are above each property. Number 20 has two flat-arched dormers and number 21 has one. Chimney stacks are situated on alternate party walls.

The interior has not been inspected. Railings are present on the stairs and areas. Numbers 18-24 are part of a group with numbers 1-15 and 28-31.
