Description

Numbers 39 and 40 Marine Parade are two early 19th-century terraced houses that were altered in the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed with brick in Flemish bond and stucco, with the roof hidden by a parapet. They are four storeys high, with a basement, and have a four-window frontage with a three-window return on the right. Recessed, flat-arched entrances have overlights. The lintel above the entrance to Number 40 reads "Lennox House". A fragment of the original Tuscan porch remains at Number 39, consisting of a column and impost block. Banded rustication is visible on the ground floor of both houses, with additional rustication at basement level of Number 39. A balcony to the first floor is a continuation of that on Number 38 and is supported by cast-iron brackets on Number 39 and thin cast-iron colonnettes on Number 40, which incorporates a plate glass verandah dating from the late 20th century. Identical cast-iron railings are present on both balconies. To the left of the entrance to Number 39 is a full-height segmental bay with tripartite windows of original design. A full-height canted bay to the right of the entrance to Number 40 was reworked in the mid-19th century and contains tripartite windows of that period to the basement, first, and third floors. All windows are flat arched, with two on Number 40 featuring lintels of gauged brick. An entablature and parapet are present on the Marine Parade elevation only. The interior has not been inspected. Original railings are located on the staircases and to the basement areas.
