Description
Number 48 is an early 19th-century terraced house on Marine Parade. It has an L-shaped layout, with a three-story, three-window elevation facing Marine Parade and a four-story, three-window elevation to the south, near Lower Rock Gardens.
The Marine Parade elevation is stuccoed and features a round-arched entry with a fanlight, flanked by fluted Tuscan colonnettes and sidelights. To the right is a pair of round-arched windows. A prostyle porch, supported by four Tuscan columns and an entablature, covers the ground floor. The porch features an arched trellis with spandrels in each bay, and a cast-iron railing leads to the first-floor balcony. Four giant Tuscan pilasters rise through the first two floors, with fluted blocks at the capital. The entablature frieze displays metopes decorated with a sunburst pattern, and is topped by a bold cornice and parapet.
The elevation facing Lower Rock Gardens is particularly noteworthy for its enclosed ground-floor porch, which combines classical and Gothic details. This includes a chamfered rusticated plinth with seven piers on socles, each panelled with blind pointed arches. Gothic-Revival sash windows sit between the piers. Across the top of the porch is an entablature consisting of diagonal fretwork and blind pointed arches, completed by a crenellated parapet.
The interior has not been inspected. A spear-headed railing encloses the area, and a grey plaque on the right side of the Marine Parade entrance commemorates Sir Samuel Brown, designer of the Chain Pier, who lived at the property in 1823.
