Description
Numbers 50 and 51 Marine Parade are a pair of terraced houses dating to around 1825, designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustin Busby. The buildings are currently undergoing restoration. They are constructed of stucco, with roofs hidden behind a parapet.
The houses are three storeys and an attic over a basement, each with three windows. A round-arched entrance porch, now boarded over, is on the return facade, alongside a round-arched niche. The entrance to Number 51 features a round-arched doorway with fanlight and a hood moulding of rusticated voussoirs and keystone. Both units have a verandah on the first floor, with fragments of cast-iron railings and stanchions, and a curved metal roof. A verandah also exists on the return facade, intersecting a segmental bay with tripartite windows. All windows are flat-arched. Number 51 has an entablature to the second floor, while Number 50 features a more elaborate cornice above the second floor. Cornices and parapets define the attics of both properties, and Number 50 is topped with a balustrade.
The interior retains some original cornice work and detailing in the ground-floor rooms. However, the interior was significantly damaged by a conversion into a nursing home in the mid to late 20th century and subsequently by squatters who destroyed cast-iron stair rails and other features.
Original railings are present to the stairs and areas.
