Description

Numbers 20 to 24 are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1855, located on the north side of Montpelier Place in Brighton. They are constructed of stucco with a slate roof; numbers 20 and 24 have details known as "turnerised" elements. The houses have a three-story layout with dormers, and each has a three-window arrangement. The facades incorporate full-height, near full-width, segmental bays. The entrances are within the segmental bays to the right, although the former entrance to number 22 is now a window.

The basement and ground floors are decorated with banded rustication. A flat-arched entrance is topped with pilasters and an entablature. The doorcase has an overlight, and the original studded door with glazed upper panels remains at number 24. All windows are flat-arched. Ground-floor windows on numbers 20 and 23 to 24 have blind boxes. First-floor windows feature molded stucco architraves, with a pediment over the center window and cornices over the outer windows. A bracketed balcony with cast-iron railings is present. Second-floor windows have molded stucco architraves. The original 6/6 sash windows are preserved in the second-floor of numbers 20 and 24. A dentil cornice and blocking course lead up to the stacks positioned on the party walls.

The interiors were not inspected during the listing process. Cast-iron area railings, finished with fleur-de-lys finials, are attached to the properties.
