Description
Numbers 28 and 29 are terraced houses located on Montpelier Road in Brighton, dating from the early 19th century. They are constructed of stucco, with roofs obscured by a parapet. The buildings rise four storeys over a basement and feature a three-window range. The house fronts have full-height, almost full-width, segmental bays, while the basement and ground floor are decorated with rustication.
There is a shared central porch supported by Doric columns, which holds an entablature with a triglyph frieze, a mutule cornice, and a blocking course. The round-arched entrance includes a fanlight, and all windows are flat-arched. The upper floor windows have architraves, with the first-floor windows featuring a central pediment and floating cornices on the outer windows. Cast-iron brackets from the first-floor balconies remain, and there is a storey band between the second and third floors. The central third-floor windows are blind, while Numbers 28 and 29 have 6/6 sashes of original design on the second and third floors. The buildings also have a dentil cornice and a parapet with balustraded panels, although the balustrading is missing on Number 29.
The interior has not been inspected, but there is a fragment of original cast-iron railings at the steps of Number 28.
