Description
This is a pillar box located at the junction with Western Road in Brighton, dating from 1859. It was made by Cochrane and Company of Dudley. The pillar box is constructed from cast iron and features a cylindrical shape on a moulded base. It has two ring mouldings at the level of the horizontal posting aperture and a coved cornice. The top is shallow stepped and domed, decorated with a pattern of segments and a central circle. This pillar box is very rare, representing the large First National standard type, and is believed to be the only one of its kind still in postal service. Notably, it does not have a Royal cipher or any legend linking it to the post office.
