Description

The New Venture Theatre Club, originally a school, is located on Bedford Place in Brighton. It consists of two parts: a single-storey wing facing the street, dated 1841, and a larger two-storey wing at the rear built around 1890. The front wing features a combination of stucco and cobbles, while the rear is constructed of brick and stucco, both topped with slate roofs.

The exterior of the front wing is double-fronted with a recessed center and displays a Tudor-Gothic style. It has a pointed-arched entrance framed by a rectangular architrave and hoodmould, featuring a panelled door of original design. Flanking the entrance are flat-arched windows with splayed reveals and hoodmoulds. The frieze above the entrance has recessed lettering that reads 'CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOLS ERECTED AD 1841'. The central gable is adorned with a stucco shield and has shaped gables on either side, each with blind flat-arched windows under hoodmoulds. The returns of the front wing also have flat-arched windows similar to those on the street front, along with gables that feature shields.

The later rear wing has a one-window range on either side of the central window. The windows here have shallow cambered arches with gauged brick heads and keystones, triple sashes with top lights, and cornices on the first floor. There are external stacks between the windows with arched gulleys for rainwater, original rainwater goods, and triangular pilaster strips. The shaped gables at both ends of the building are flanked by stucco consoles, which are coped with stucco and topped with intricate finials.

A dwarf wall runs along the street, featuring square, stuccoed, and corniced gate piers on either side of the 1841 wing. The interior has not been inspected.
