Description

48 and 49 Broad Street are shops and dwellings with an earlier 19th-century front that conceals a 17th-century core. The building is constructed of stucco and painted brick, topped with a slate roof and featuring a brick end stack. It stands three storeys high with a cellar and has a two-window range, showcasing 6/6 sash windows set within moulded stucco architraves. The second floor has a sill band, with central and quoin pilasters leading to a moulded band and cornice, topped by a stone-coped parapet with pilasters. The ground floor is finished in engraved stucco, with central entrances featuring 20th-century glazed doors with cambered heads, flanked by 20th-century plate glass windows also with cambered heads.

Inside No. 49, the cellar has a brick vault and some ashlar work, including a column, with chamfered ceiling beams that have stops to the joists and plank doors. No. 48 retains elaborate plaster ceilings from around 1600 in the front rooms on the first and second floors, with plaster mouldings dividing large panels into various shapes, filled with designs of fleur-de-lys, fruit, leaves, and bosses. The cellar of No. 48 includes metal wine racks.
