Description

54 and 55 Broad Street are shops and dwellings, now functioning solely as shops. The buildings feature mid and late 19th-century facades that cover earlier structures from the 18th and 15th centuries. They are constructed of brick and stucco, topped with a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof, and include an 18th-century brick stack on the right front. The layout is L-shaped, with the main architectural interest located at the rear.

The south front has a twin gable roof made of Welsh slate, with some composite tiles. The buildings stand two storeys high with an attic and feature a two-window range. There is a 19th-century casement window on the left and a 20th-century plain sash window on the right, along with two 20th-century lights in the gables. The attic may have a possible jetty, while the first floor has a deep jetty with a moulded bressumer, stop-chamfered soffit beams, and arched braces supported by moulded springers and battened posts. The ground floor includes 19th-century workshop windows and a four-centred arch between moulded posts leading to the front range.

Inside No.54, there is a moulded ceiling frame, a 19th-century corner fireplace, and a moulded capital and ceiling beam in the shop area. No.55 features a 19th-century winder staircase with stick balusters. The second floor contains 19th-century fireplaces, four-panel doors, and overlights. The first floor also has four-panel doors and overlights, while the cellar reveals some masonry. The rear wing conceals a fine 15th-century roof with carved wind braces.
