Description
The building, formerly known as the City Arms Hotel, is now occupied by Barclays Bank and the County Court. It dates from around 1790 and features earlier architectural elements. The exterior is finished in engraved stucco and brick, topped with a composite tile roof. It stands three storeys high and has a six-window range, with ten 6/6 sash windows featuring semicircular heads under gauged brick semicircular arches, and three 3/3 sash windows above. A moulded stucco cornice leads to a stone-coped parapet, and to the left, there is a moulded wood pediment displaying the City Arms in relief. The entrance on the left consists of modern two-leaf, six-panel doors and a fanlight set in a stucco doorcase beneath a restored pediment hood. This entrance is flanked by 6/6 sash windows, with three additional sashes to the right. The building has rusticated quoins and a moulded storey band overall. The right return side features a three-window range with a central cambered-head sash on the second floor and a further modern five-window range to the right. Inside, the ground floor boasts a 17th-century moulded ceiling frame, while the cellar is partly stone-lined with a brick vaulted ceiling. In the attic of the rear wing, there are exposed stop-chamfered purlins and mutilated tie beams, along with a massive tie beam featuring mutilated box-framing. The building was constructed by Charles, Duke of Norfolk.
