Description

The Hereford Bowling Club Pavilion is a house that has been converted into a clubhouse, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with three rendered brick stacks located at the rear and left side. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a three-window range that includes a central canted bay fitted with 20th-century lights and upper casements, flanked by 6/6 sash windows under segmental arches. A late 19th-century verandah with a composite tile roof extends from the ground floor, leading to steps that descend to the bowling green. The left side of the building is roughcast and has two stack bases.

Inside, there are 19th-century winder steps that lead to a first-floor skittle alley, which features a panelled dado. The interior also includes late 18th-century to early 19th-century six-panel doors and a 19th-century fire surround. The cellar is stone-lined, with chamfered ceiling beams and an 18th-century brick vault.

Historically, the adjoining bowling green is believed to be the second oldest in England, established in 1484, with the first recorded mention occurring in 1697.
