Description

Nos. 1 and 1A Widemarsh Street is a former house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. The building features a late 18th century and 19th century façade, but has an 18th-century core. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof and has 20th-century brick stacks at the right and rear. The structure is four storeys tall with a cellar and has a three-window range. To the right, there is an 8/8 sash window under a gauged-brick flat arch, with similar windows above featuring stone sills, and a 4/4 sash on the top floor. The parapet has coping. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front, while the right return, which faces Bewell Street, has chamfered ashlar sandstone masonry on the ground floor and brick storeybands above. This return features a protruding element with two 9/9 sash windows on the first and second floors, a downstanding storeyband to the left, and a brick flat arch above. The third floor has 6/6 sash windows, with a 20th-century parapet and coping. The ground floor has been significantly altered, possibly with a blocked shop window on the left. There are doorways at the center of the protruding element (blocked) and to the left center, featuring a six-fielded-panel door in a moulded wooden case. The rear of the building is finished in stucco.

Inside No. 1, there is a mid-19th-century dogleg and winder staircase with stick balusters. The third floor contains 19th-century four-panel doors and simple fireplaces, while the second and first floors have similar doors and fireplaces. No. 1A features an early 18th-century dogleg staircase with a moulded rail, turned balusters, and pendant finials. The third floor has battened plank doors, and the second floor includes a corner fireplace with a cast-iron grate and surround, 17th and 18th-century panelling, a coved ceiling, two-panel doors, a wall cupboard, and fireplaces at both the rear and front, along with a panelled dado and a 17th-century panelled door. The first floor has two-panel doors, 17th and 18th-century panelling, a coved ceiling, and a corner fireplace. The ground floor features a panelled hall and stairwell, and the cellar contains a range, a copper, and some panelling.
