Description

Sir William Moyle's Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built in 1583, with significant alterations made in the 20th century. They are constructed from slatestone rubble and feature a slate roof with gable ends and gable end stacks that have rubble shafts, shaped granite caps, and cornices. The building has a long rectangular layout, consisting of six one-room plan almshouses on the ground floor and six similar almshouses above on the first floor. Access to the upper floor is provided by stairs at either end of a gallery that runs across the front, creating a loggia for the ground floor houses. In the 20th century, the almshouses were converted into four separate dwellings.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an open galleried front that has six slate-hung gables supported by square stone rubble piers with chamfered corners. These piers are connected by a low stone rubble wall at the base, which rises to the first floor level at either end where the stone stairs provide access to the gallery. The gallery features a simple timber railed balustrade. The ground and first floors have three doors with granite hollow-chamfered and stopped surrounds, arranged as follows: at ground and first floor, there are two-light casements, a door, three casements, a door, two casements, a door, and two casements. All windows on the building are from the 20th century. The left side of the building has a two-pane sash window on both the ground and first floors to the right. The rear of the building includes two-storey additions from the 20th century. The interior has been much altered in the 20th century, and the roof structure was not inspected.
