Description

This is a mid-19th century forge with a house attached, incorporating an earlier building, likely from the mid-18th century. The Old Tannery section dates to the late 17th century, with subsequent alterations and additions. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with a slate roof, ridge tiles, a hipped end to the left, and a half-hip to the right. Three front lateral stacks are present.

The building's plan consists of three ranges. The left-hand block is the forge, featuring a front lateral stack. The central range, of two rooms with an outshut and a front lateral stack, connects to the Old Tannery on the right. The Old Tannery end block contains a single room, a stair hall, and a front lateral stack.

The front elevation facing the road includes a 2-light casement with a segmental head at ground level in the forge section. The central range features a 2-light C20 casement in a former doorway within the outshut, and a blocked first-floor window with a timber lintel to the right of the external stack. A straight joint marks the boundary with the Old Tannery block, which has a tall 8-pane stair light window. The left side of the forge displays a 19th-century entry with a central door flanked by horizontal sliding sash windows, each with 16 panes and segmental heads. First-floor windows are 20th-century replacements, also with segmental heads. The rear of the forge has 20th-century windows at both ground and first floors, and 20th-century doors at ground level. A former 2-storey attached range has been removed.

The right side of the Old Tannery has a ground-floor 4-pane sash with a segmental head, and two first-floor 4-pane sashes with cambered heads. A slightly set back 2-storey addition with a stack on its right side is present. The rear of the Old Tannery features a 19th-century addition to the left, with a ground-floor 16-pane sash and a 6-panelled door set in a recess; two 20-pane sashes are on the first floor. The central range has three first-floor windows—a 3-light casement with L hinges, a 6-pane sash, and a 2-light C20 casement. On the ground floor, a 3-light casement (formerly a door to a passage) and a single-storey rear unheated range with a door and three C20 casements are featured.

The interior of the central range (of the Old Tannery) originally comprised a 2-room house with a central passage, and slate floors remain.
