Description
The Wagon and Horses Inn is a late 18th-century coaching inn located on Old Frome Road in Doulting. The building features a rendered and colourwashed exterior with tile roofs, including double-Roman tiles, and coped verges. It has ashlar stacks, two of which have moulded caps, along with two reconstituted stone stacks.
The inn is designed in a Tudor style and consists of two storeys with a symmetrical three-by-three bay layout, where the inn occupies the left side and the coach house and stables are on the right. The predominant windows are three-light stone-mullioned types, with three on the ground floor that have cornice drips. The windows feature iron casements with diamond-panel lights, while the left bay has 20th-century casements.
There is a door opening to the left leading into the inn, which is framed by a gabled ashlar porch and a chamfered square-headed door opening, with a 20th-century half-glazed door. The coach house is slightly lower and has a first-floor door opening in a stone surround, accessed by a flight of stone steps with an iron handrail. Additionally, there are three further door openings on the ground floor, all with plank doors, including one with a broad segmental head and another in a stone architrave with a cornice drip.
