Description

The Swan Hotel is a coaching inn built in the early 19th century. It features a stucco exterior with brick at the rear and a tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical front facing north that includes five windows, and a side elevation facing Station Road with three windows. Notable architectural details include an eaves cornice and frieze that projects above the keys of the upper windows, a first-floor band, moulded quoins, and plinths. The first-floor openings have eaved architraves, while the ground floor has a cornice supported by brackets above the architraves, with cills also on brackets. The windows are Victorian sashes, and there are four dormers with cambered lead roofs. The wide entrance, originally a carriageway, features a Tuscan Order with two pilasters and has been modified to include a narrowed opening for double doors set within side panels that are half-glazed. The west elevation, dating from the mid-19th century, has a gable with an ornamental bargeboard, a blank panel on the first floor, and two doorways. At the rear, there are extensive buildings primarily with tiled (and some slate) roofing, constructed with brick and painted brick, all showcasing vernacular features.
