Description

The Whyte Lyon is an 18th and early 19th century coaching inn situated alongside the main road. The central section, the oldest part of the building, is three storeys high with a 2:3 window arrangement. To the southwest, a taller, early 19th century two-storey extension features four windows. On the northeast side, the original block continues at a lower level, two storeys and one window, and extends again, still lower, for two storeys and three windows. The roof is tiled with hipped ends and brick dentil eaves. The walls are painted brickwork in a Flemish bond pattern, with flat rubbed arches and bands at the first and second floors in the central section, and a plinth. The windows are sash windows. The northern bay of the southwest part features a large Victorian doorcase with a moulded canopy on brackets and a plain door. A ground floor bay window, flanked by two modern windows, sits beneath a tile-roofed canopy on brackets. The northern bay of the three-storey section has a wide elliptical arch, a carriage entrance, with a stone keystone and impost blocks. A plain doorcase follows, and a coupled doorway within a pitched roof porch, with six-panelled doors is located at the centre of the northernmost part. The southwest gable has a Venetian window with impost bands on each floor, set within a slightly projecting wall. Modern additions are present at the rear.
