Description

Fern Cottage is a range of two cottages dating to around the 17th century, with later 18th and 19th-century elements. The cottages are built of red brick, with timber framing and brick infilling to the right-hand side. The roofs are of clay tiles, with gable and hipped sections and a brick axial stack.

The cottages are arranged as a single storey and attic, with an asymmetrical three-window facade. The windows are mostly 2- and 3-light casements, alongside plank doors. The right-hand side features timber framing to the first floor, incorporating curved tension braces and brick infilling; the ground floor has been rebuilt in brick. The left-hand side is a lower brick range with a gable to the right.

The interior of the cottages has not been inspected.

A two-bay range at the right-hand end, known as Harebell Cottage, is a separate dwelling and not considered to be of special interest. Harebell Cottage incorporates a storey post and attached curved tension brace, remnants of a timber frame that forms part of the front of No. 2 Fern Cottage.
