Description

The Star and Garter Hotel is an early 19th-century coaching inn located on the east side of Andover High Street. It features a wide, symmetrical facade with a three-storey design and a low-pitched slate roof that has eaves moulding. The exterior is finished in stucco, with a first-floor band above a rusticated ground floor. The middle window has moulded architraves, while the ground floor includes voissoirs and keys at the plinth. The windows are sashes set in reveals, and there are two-storey bow windows on either side of the building, featuring slender pilasters, with the upper ones being reeded, and plastered aprons. The two wider windows flanking the entrance are three-light windows.

A Doric porch with fluted columns supports a flat roof that extends into narrow balconies beside the three middle windows, adorned with wrought-iron rails in a 'Greek' pattern. Inside, plain pilasters flank the wide entrance, which includes side windows next to a half-glazed door and a decorative fanlight. To the north side, there is a lower attached building that is integral with No 4, featuring an arched sash window above an oval-arched carriageway entrance. The south elevation is simpler and includes a later large angular bay and a secondary entrance, while the lower rear extensions have tile roofing.
