Description

The George Hotel, situated at the rear of numbers 16 and 18 High Street, largely dates to the 18th century. Behind a modern front, the rear sections of the hotel remain, facing south into the yard. A carriage entrance still exists, leading to a roofed area created from a fragment of the original timber-framed street front. The building is two storeys and three bays wide, with two windows per bay. The western section has a slate mansard roof and a steeper tile roof to the east. Red brick walling in a Flemish bond is visible on the western part, with a stone coping to the parapet, rubbed flat arches, a first-floor band, stone cills, and a plinth. The two-storey angled bay is in painted brickwork, while the eastern part has rendering below a first-floor band, and painted brickwork above. The windows are sash windows with two or three lights on each ground-floor and in the angled bay. A round-headed doorway leads to a six-panelled door.
