Description

This is a road sign located about 70 metres north-west of The George in Wincham, dating from 1907 to 1911. It is made of cast iron and features a 'T'-shaped post. At the top, there is a red triangle displaying the letters SAC, which stands for Somerset Automobile Club. The main plate on the sign reads "Winsham/please/drive/slowly" on the front and "Thank you" on the reverse, along with the casting signature of W and F Wills, Engineers, Bridgwater. This sign is one of 36 privately financed signs that were accepted by Somerset County Council in 1907. Two signs were ordered by Chard Rural District Council in 1911 for this village, and both of those remain today, with very few others still in existence.
