Description

Winsham County Primary School is a village school with an attached schoolhouse, dated 1850, and has undergone some modifications. It is constructed from roughly squared local stone with Ham stone ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof between stepped coped gables, along with brick chimney stacks. The building has an 'H' plan, consisting of a single-storey school and a two-storey house.

The south elevation facing Pooles Lane has four bays, each with wide lancet windows under labels, which have been fitted with small-pane casements. Between the second and third bays, there is a projecting gabled porch topped with a cross finial, featuring a pointed-arched doorway with a label. Above the doorway is an incised stone inscribed 'AD 1850', and there is a small stone tabernacle with boarded sides that houses the school bell.

The west and east end gables have pairs of later windows. The east elevation facing Church Street extends northwards and includes a three-unit plain window, a segmental pointed-arched doorway, and another lancet window. This is followed by the three-bay schoolhouse, where the third bay is a north crosswing. The lower bays one and three have trefoil-arched three-light mullioned and transomed windows under segmental-pointed relieving arches, while the upper bays feature two-light mullioned and transomed windows, with bay one set in a gabled dormer. There is a simpler window under the eaves of upper bay two, below which is a segmental pointed-arched doorway. The interiors have not been inspected.
