Description

Lullingstone is a semi-detached cottage dating from the 16th century and later, located on the east side of Fore Street in Winsham. The building is constructed from local stone rubble and features a thatched roof with a plain east gable and a continuation to the west, along with a brick end chimney stack. It stands two storeys high with four bays. The windows are small-pane casements of an earlier style, with 4-light windows in the ground floor bays one and four, and 2-light windows in the first floor, except for bay four which has a 3-light window. The lower windows have central iron-framed opening lights, and the window in bay one is set under a later brick arch. There is a small double stair light in lower bay three, and in bay two, the ground floor features an early boarded door set in a very heavy timber frame that is chamfered and camber-arched. The east gable has 20th-century small-pane casements.

Internally, the cottage has a cross-passage plan, with one side wall made of wattle-and-daub and the other constructed from timber stud and panel. The party wall is timber framed, featuring a blocked triangular arched doorway. The crossbears have scroll-stops, and the end gable contains a plain fireplace with a blocked doorway alongside it. In the rear wall of the south room, there is a fireplace with a heavy cambered-arched timber bressumer that is supported by shaped side timbers. The roof trusses are of jointed crucks and are mostly closed. There are later extensions to the rear of the building. Originally, Lullingstone was one house along with Mynydd Moel, which is attached to the southeast.
