Description
Barlborough Infants School is a village school built in 1870. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and features flush angle quoins. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with Welsh slate, showcasing alternating bands of fishscale slates. The gables are stone-coped and include moulded kneelers, ball finials, and spearhead finials. The building has prominent, symmetrically arranged brick and ashlar ridge stacks and a dentil eaves cornice.
The school is designed in an H-plan and is a single storey. The south elevation consists of 2-3-2 bays, with the three central bays gabled and projecting. There is a stepped arrangement of three large windows beneath plain stone lintels, featuring timber mullions and transoms along with secondary glazing bars. A single slit window is located in the gable, flanked by two large three-light windows under plain stone lintels, also with timber mullions and a transom.
The west and east elevations have similar two-light windows high in the gables and three-light windows on the return elevations. On the west side, the inner elevation of the H has a lean-to veranda with broad segmental arched windows. Above, there are four large three-light gabled roof dormers. The east elevation is similar but includes a small 20th-century addition at the ground floor.
