Description

Barlborough Old Hall is a manor house dating to 1618, with substantial elements from the 17th and 18th centuries, and restored in 1985. It is attributed to Robert Smythson. The house is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and quoins, and has a pantile roof punctuated by four brick gable stacks and a brick ridge stack. Stone coped gables feature moulded kneelers. The plan is H-shaped. The north elevation has five bays. It features a pair of Tudor-arched doorways with moulded surrounds and plank doors, a 3-light square section flush mullion window to the right, and two 2-light windows to the left. The first floor has a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, flanked by two 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows. The south elevation has a doorway with a segmental-arched wedge brick lintel. Three-light recessed and chamfered mullion and transom windows flank the doorway, with a blocked single light window positioned between the door and one of the windows, and a smaller blind window above it. The first floor features five 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows, all with plain hoodmoulds. The east elevation is divided into 2-2-2 bays, with the outer projecting bays gabled. The left gable has a pair of cross windows on the ground floor, two 2-light windows above, and two small blind windows in the gable. The right gable has a single and a 2-light window to the ground floor, two 2-light windows above, and two small blind windows in the gable. The recessed centre part contains two 3-light Yorkshire sashes to the ground floor, and similar, smaller windows above. The west elevation has projecting gabled bays, blind apart from one cross window. The recessed centre part has a 3-light mullion and transom window with a 3-light window above, flanked by full-height lean-to bays. The interior features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A north-west room has a rebuilt chamfered segmental-arched hearth, and another room has a steeper segmental arch. Four-centred arched doorways are present. A moulded cornice runs throughout. A stone staircase is located at the south end. One upper room contains a plaster overmantel with fluted pilasters and the date 1633. A second overmantel has tapering columns; a third plaster overmantel was covered at the time of re-survey.
