Description
The stone gateway and attached wall at the entrance to the Memorial Gardens, dated 1869, is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings. It features a robust four-centred arched gateway with a deep chamfer and a dropped keystone. The gateway is adorned with a returned hoodmould that includes mosaic work in the spandrels. It is flanked by stepped buttresses, with the lower part gabletted and the upper part featuring a set-off. There are return buttresses to both the west and east sides. Above the gateway, a raised parapet displays a recessed decorative mosaic panel inscribed with "MIZ PAH/MDCCCLIX." The parapet is finished with a moulded base and double chamfered coping. A pair of iron gates with spearhead cresting complements the structure, while plain stone walls on either side have steep double-chamfered coping with bead moulding.
