Description
The gateway at Stichill House, dated 1869, is designed in an ornamental Jacobean style. It features tall rusticated gatepiers at the central vehicle entrance, which are connected to lower piers on either side by walls that include openings for pedestrian gates. The structure is made of polished sandstone ashlar and has a base course with a moulded coping along the walls. The tall central gatepiers are topped with heavy stylised rusticated caps and obelisk finials that rest on ball feet. The outer piers are adorned with banded and ball finials. The pedestrian entrance is framed by lugged, roll-moulded architraves that incorporate a central relief carving of a griffin head. Additionally, there is a decorative cast-iron arch that connects the central piers.
