Description
The gateway at Merchiston Castle, part of Napier University on Colinton Road in Edinburgh, dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a round-arched entrance with rock-faced coping at the top of the wall. The gateway is flanked by rusticated piers that have horizontal bands of rock-faced masonry. Above the arch, there is a banded architrave topped with lions in a reclining position. The design includes quadrant walls on either side.
