Description
10 Colinton Road is a five-storey, eight-bay block of modernistic flats designed by John Jerdan in 1934. The building features a flat roof and has distinctive cut-away balconied corners, with underground garages flanking the structure. It is finished in cream render with horizontal bands of red brick, which includes a red brick base course and continuous bands above the ground and third floors. The front and sides are topped with a red brick parapet, and the balconies at the cut-away corners are also made of red brick.
On the southeast (front) elevation, there are period-style windows, previously metal-framed, in each bay and on each floor, except for the outer bays. The four central bays are recessed and have a fluted and stepped brick parapet. The central entrance features an ashlar surround and a projecting canopy, with a timber door that has a glazed opening and brass ironmongery. This entrance is accessed by steps that have a solid curved ashlar parapet, with windows on either side that have external shutters.
The northwest (rear) elevation has single windows in each bay and on each floor, with four tall windows in the central bay that light the stair hall; the top window is round-arched and keystoned. There is also a small rectangular flat-roofed service block at the center of the roof.
The southwest elevation is four bays wide, with single windows on each floor of the left bays. The right side features cut-away deck-style balconies supported by concrete columns and handrails. The left corner slightly advances with a square stack, and there are two red brick wallhead stacks with ashlar coping.
The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest elevation, except for the square corner stack. Originally, it had multi-pane metal windows, but these have mostly been replaced with modern versions that follow a similar pattern. The building has a flat roof and five wallhead stacks.
Inside, the hall and stair feature a green polished marble floor with black and white geometrical inlay. The flats have Art Deco door handles, and there is a brass stair rail.
The boundary wall is a low stepped ashlar wall at the front, complemented by tall obelisk gatepiers with offset coping and lamps, along with smaller piers that also have offset coping.
