Gateway, Woolmet House

The gateway at Woolmet House, built around 1686, is a Renaissance entrance featuring a triumphal arch flanked by tall classical piers. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with later random rubble walls on either side and a later stone lion added to the design.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a semi-circular archway with a projecting keystone set on channel-jointed piers that have shaped imposts. The archway is flanked by pilasters adorned with cushioned courses and capitals featuring ovolo moulding and egg and dart ornamentation. Above, the entablature includes a coursed architrave, a frieze with triglyph detail, and a projecting banded cornice, topped by the later worn stone lion. Additional squared piers with corniced capitals are present, along with smaller setback pillars that have cyma reversa capitals and a vertical gap where original iron railings would have been located.

The east (rear) elevation mirrors the west elevation but is less defined and lacks the same level of ornamentation.

Surrounding the playing fields, the boundary wall is made of random rubble with shaped stone copes and small squared gatepiers.
