Description
The Lion Gateway is a gateway built around 1530 and rebuilt around 1833. It is constructed from greenstone rubble blocks, with some ironstone rubble, limestone ashlar, and some render. The gateway features a four-centred arch with inner roll mouldings on the soffit, which is supported by crude corbels and rendered surfaces. The outer order is chamfered, and there is a hood mould with head label stops. In the spandrels, there are four weathered coats of arms. The top is rectangular and coped, adorned with a band of lozenge decoration and a large statue of a crowned lion passant, likely created by C. J. Carter of Louth. There are low 20th-century iron gates.
