Drumbank, Old Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh

Drumbank is a villa dating from around 1845, notable for its unusual mix of classical detailing. The building is two storeys high, with single storey and attic wings. It is rendered and features polished ashlar dressings, including a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern.

The front elevation has two shallow steps leading up to a central advanced bay, which is flanked by Ionic pilasters at the first floor. This bay features a shallow block pediment with an urn that breaks the eaves. The entrance is a round-arched, rusticated recess that houses a six-panel, two-leaf door topped with a fanlight. The ground floor windows have channelled surrounds, while the first floor windows are adorned with Egyptian-style block pediments. The corners of the building are rusticated at the ground floor and chamfered at the first floor, with engaged Ionic columns and block pedimented windows, along with wrought-iron balconies.

In contrast, the rear elevation is plain, lacking the detailed mouldings found on the front. It features a projecting stair tower at the centre with a tall stair window and a window on each floor of the house. The single storey piended wings have a window facing west, a bull's-eye window on the front, a door on the return, and a central gablehead to the attic with a window.

The roof is peind and covered with grey slates, while the end stacks are harled with a simple cornice.

To the south of the villa, there is a courtyard accessed from the east through ashlar gatepiers. This area includes a two-storey stable with a loft and three single storey, three-bay piend-roofed cottages, constructed from random rubble with ashlar dressings. Most of these buildings retain their original openings, although some have been boarded up.

A walled garden lies to the west, featuring random rubble walls topped with flat ashlar copes. In the southwest corner of the garden, there is a triangular pavilion, or dovecot, which has a door at ground level.
