Description

Nw Lodge, located at East Lodges, The Drum in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, is a pair of classical single-storey lodges dating from the late 18th century. These lodges are connected by quadrant walls and feature paired rusticated ashlar gatepiers and gates.

The northeast elevation, which is the principal facade, has slightly advanced pavilions facing the road. It includes Venetian windows in the center, with external shuttering on the left lodge. The side elevations are blank and adjoin a rubble boundary wall that marks the estate. The lodges are constructed of stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings on the road side and chimneys, while the sides and rear are made of squared rubble.

The southwest elevation, or rear, shows the southeast lodge in a roughly U-plan with a door located in the re-entrant angle. It features regular fenestration on each side. The Venetian windows have center lights that are glazed with 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the side lights are blind. The southwest elevation mostly has 12-pane windows, with some 16-pane examples. The roofs are piended slate with coped ashlar ridge stacks, and there is a flat roof with an ornamental vent on a later extension, which includes irregular Carron lights.

The interior was not seen during the 2000 inspection.

The quadrant walls and gates consist of a base course and moulded gablet coping, adjoining paired rusticated gatepiers topped with a cornice. Each gatepier has a stone overthrow for pedestrian access below, framed with a moulded surround and timber boarded doors. There are wrought-iron lamp holders on the innermost piers, although the lamps are missing. The wrought-iron gates are of a simple design with semi-circular bracing.
