Description
Hillcross House is a house located on the south side of High Street in Burton in Lonsdale, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar with painted dressings and features a slate roof. The house has a central staircase plan and stands two storeys tall with a double fronted design. The facade projects forward over a central entrance porch, which incorporates vernacular adaptations of baroque details. The porch has a moulded surround with cheek pieces, and consoles that support a broken pediment featuring a moulded finial at the back. The entrance consists of a six-panel door. There are two windows on the ground floor and two on the upper floor, all with plain surrounds and 12-pane sashes. The building is accented by projecting quoins, a string course below the modillioned eaves cornice, and gable end coping with ridge stacks.
