Description

1 and 2 Constable Cottages, Burton in Lonsdale, began as a stable block, part of the Fern Lea estate. They date to 1824 and were built for Thomas and Jenny Barker. The building is constructed of pebbledash with painted stone dressings and has a tile roof. It is two storeys high and has two bays. A paired central entrance replaces the original carriage entrance, each entrance having a simple surround and doors installed around 1970. There are two windows to each floor, also with plain surrounds, and fitted with casement windows dating to around 1970. A central panel on the upper floor is inscribed with the initials "B TJ" and the date 1824. Right-hand gable end and left-hand ridge stacks are visible.
