Description

Old Gledstone is a stable block, now serving as an estate office and house, built around 1770, likely by John Carr of York. The building features ashlar stone on the front, squared dressed stone on the sides and rear, and brick in the courtyard, topped with a hipped slate roof. The structure is square on the outside and circular on the inside, with two storeys.

The front facade has nine bays, symmetrically arranged around a central round-headed entry, flanked by a blind arcade that has windows except in the end bays. The third and seventh bays project slightly and are topped with pediments. Above, square windows have plain reveals and casements. The rear is also symmetrical with nine bays, where the repeated feature is a simple doorway, and the fourth and sixth bays have segmental-arched entries. Circular breathers are positioned above the four outer doorways, and tripartite windows are located above the entries.

On the south side, there is a stone consoled cornice over the central doorway, which, along with the opposite doorway in the courtyard, was salvaged from Gledstone Hall, demolished in 1928. The courtyard features a continuous arcade of 16 elliptical arches with stone bases and imposts, and simple cambered heads above the pitch holes. Spur stones are present at the cardinal points. One bay has been filled in to create the front door of the house in the 1970s, and there is an iron balcony over two adjacent bays. Inside the entry passage, a stable area still retains stone posts for the stalls. Above the entry, there is a square base with a clock, topped by a hemispherical dome, ball, and weathervane supported by twelve Doric columns.
