Description

The sundial on the terrace at Gledstone Hall dates from 1748 and was likely relocated to its current position in 1923. It is made of sandstone and has a cubical shape. Each of its four faces features a different inscription: the north side reads "Latitude 54 HR Rect 1748," the south side states "The Sun to rule the Day," the east side says "We go hence like a shaddow," and the west side instructs "Watch and Pray." The initials "HR" may refer to H Richardson, who was the rector of Thornton at that time. The sundial is situated in the center of the staircase leading to the lower terrace.
