Description

BERRINGTON C.P. - SJ 50 NW 3/24 - Stable block approx. 15 metres to west of Berrington Hall GV II Stable block. Circa 1805, probably by Joseph Bromfield (c.1743-1824). Red brick; hipped slate roof. T-plan. 2 storeys. Rendered frieze; small brick ridge stack off-centre to right. 5 first-floor 2-light leaded wooden casements and first-floor door to left with 4 flush panels and approached by 15 external stone steps with wrought iron balustrade and segmental-arched recess beneath; 4 ground-floor blind windows with gauged brick heads, second from left has possibly inserted segmental- headed door with 6 flush panels; probably inserted small sash to right of 6-panelled door and probably inserted door to far right. Central projecting ground-floor hipped roofed block; 2 x 1 bays; glazing bar sashes with gauged heads, and segmental-headed door in right-hand return front with 6 flush panels. Pair of large segmental-headed 2-leaf doors at rear. Interior: stable have stalls with curved-top dividers and topped octagonal posts with finials. The stable block forms a group with Berrington Hall (q.v.).
