Description
Berrington War Memorial is a churchyard memorial that was unveiled in 1920. It is made of Grinshill sandstone and limestone, featuring inset lead lettering. The memorial takes the form of an obelisk mounted on a tapered base with a stepped plinth, located to the west of the tower of All Saints Church.
The tapered body of the obelisk rises from the stepped plinth and includes a deep, projecting band at about half its height, with pediments on each side. The south face displays an inset limestone plaque with lead lettering that reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE FOLLOWING / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR / 1914 + 1918," followed by the names of the fallen. At the bottom, it states, "ERECTED BY PARISHIONERS OF BERRINGTON / 1920." The upper step of the plinth has a similar inset plaque that reads, "ALSO OF / (names of the fallen) / ‘WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945." The other faces of the memorial are blank, and the upper surfaces of the steps are cambered.
