Description

Cross Houses Hospital includes the part used as the hospital administration block, staff accommodation, and sections of Wards Nos 1B (Lyth Hill Ward), 2A (Breidden Ward), 2B (Grinshill Ward), and 3A (Ragleth Ward). This building was originally constructed as the Atcham Union Workhouse between 1792 and 1793 by J.H. Haycock from Shrewsbury.

The structure is made of red brick and features a hipped slate roof, designed in an H-plan. It stands three storeys tall and has a dentil brick eaves cornice. The roof includes a brick stack located off-centre to the right and another brick ridge stack to the right. The façade is arranged in a pattern of 2:7:2 bays with projecting end pavilions. The windows are glazing bar sashes with painted brick flat arches, although the second-floor window in the third bay from the left has been replaced by three casements in the late 20th century. There is a central blocked segmental-headed archway with a pair of 20th-century glazed doors. The pavilions contain doors between the second and third bays and the ninth and tenth bays, featuring four flush panels and painted brick flat arches. At the rear, there are two wings that project outward.

Later additions to the building were made in 1851 or 1871 and again in 1903, although these are not considered of special architectural interest.
