Description

Gilling West Post Office is a house and shop built in the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features coursed sandstone construction and a concrete interlocking tile roof with stone slates at the eaves. The building is two storeys high and has three first-floor windows, with quoins marking the corners.

On the ground floor, there is a window that incorporates a post box, set in a pecked ashlar surround, to the left of a corniced shop front. This shop front has square bay windows on either side of a part-glazed four-panel door, which is located below a blind fanlight and flanked by pilasters with fluted cavetto corbels and paterae. The right side of the ground floor features pecked ashlar stonework.

The first floor includes, from left to right, a sash window with glazing bars, a 16-pane sash window, and a blind sash window, all of which have deep lintels that are lightly scored to resemble voussoirs. Between the second and third first-floor windows, there is a Norwich Union Society firemark. Additionally, a lead gutter discharges into a lead rainwater head and pipe on the adjacent property, No 38. The building is finished with kneelers and ashlar coping.
