Description

Waterloo House is a house dating to circa 1815, located in Gilling West. It is constructed of coursed sandstone with a pantile roof, featuring stone slates at the eaves. The house is two storeys high with two first-floor windows. A central six-panel door is set below an overlight with marginal panes, all within an ashlar surround. To the extreme right is a board passage door enclosed within a chamfered quoined ashlar surround. Sash windows with glazing bars are fitted with projecting sills and deep lintels. An ashlar coping is present on the left-hand side and end stacks are visible. Local tradition suggests that some pre-Conquest carved stones, now displayed in the porch of Gilling Church, were unearthed when a cellar was formed at Waterloo House.
