Description
These are five cottages located at 50, 52, 54, 56, and 58 High Street, dating from the early 18th century. They are constructed of rubble with 20th-century clay pantile roofs and feature a two-storey, L-shaped plan. The southern elevation has two bays (Nos 56 and 58), while the western elevation has three bays (Nos 50, 52, and 54). The outer ends have quoins. The openings are topped with segmental arches made of brick headers, with infill above the door and window frames. Nos 50, 52, and 56, 58 have central paired doors, while No 54 has a right-handed bay in the corner and retains its original part-glazed six-panel door; the others have 20th-century six-panel doors. The ground-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars, and the first-floor windows are 9-pane unequally-hung sashes. The cottages feature raised verges with reversed crowstepping at the outer ends and rebuilt brick stacks at the ends of each bay away from the doors. The rear of Nos 50, 52, and 54 has side-sliding sash windows, and No 58 has a small ground-floor window on the left return. Locally, these cottages are known as The Square and were situated opposite the junction of High Street and a road called Kirk Street, which ran around the northern edge of the churchyard until the early 19th century.
