Description
The Highgate Hotel is a large building, originally a house or houses, dating from 1769. This date is displayed on a panel above a ground floor window, which has an inscribed lintel that reads: "TO THE DWELLERS IN THIS PLACE GOD GRANTE PEACE." The exterior is constructed of wet-dashed rubble, featuring a plinth and an eaves cornice, with a boxed wooden gutter supported by dentils. The southern side of the building is partly slate-hung. The roof is made of graduated slate and has rendered chimneys at both ends and one to the left of the center, running parallel to the ridge. There is a small roof access at the front.
The building has three storeys and five bays. To the extreme left, there is a studded plank door in a chamfered surround with a false four-centred head, which leads to the rear. A panelled door, set in a wooden surround, is accessed by stone steps and has a dated and inscribed window to its left and three windows to its right. All the windows are sashes with glazing bars; the upper sashes align with the ground floor sashes but are narrower and feature wide glazing bars.
