Description

This is a shop, originally an inn, dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made later. It is located on the east side of Kendal Highgate. It's believed to be the first building in Kendal to have sash windows replacing leaded lights, likely constructed in the early 18th century for Walter Simondson, as evidenced by the initials "W & E S" on the rainwater head. The building is constructed from coursed, squared rubble, topped with a bracketed eaves cornice. It has a graduated slate roof with chimneys – stone on the north side and rendered on the south. The building is three storeys high and has two bays. A 19th-century shop front has been inserted, featuring a part-glazed door set back to the right of a plate-glass window, within a corniced wooden surround with panelled pilasters. To the right, the entrance to a yard has a semicircular head within a rusticated surround. Two sash windows are situated within shouldered architraves on each floor above; the first-floor windows have cornices. The north side of the yard passage has windows with glazing bars, flanking a re-used panelled door and a semicircular fanlight in a reeded doorcase. The building also features a segmentally-vaulted cellar.
