Description
Nos. 163 and 163A on Highgate is a shop with flats above and behind, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It was converted for use by butchers in the mid-19th century. The building features rendered rubble with hammer-dressed plinths below the shop windows and has a boxed gutter supported by dentils. The hipped roof is covered with graduated slate and has a stone chimney at the center. The north corner of the building is rounded, and the windows on the north side are slightly rounded as well.
The structure is three storeys high and consists of three bays. The shop front, which may date from the early 19th century, includes a vertically-split panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above it. To the left is a fixed window with glazing bars, and to the right is a wide sash display window. The ornate wooden surround features cornicing, panelled pilasters, and egg and dart mouldings with wreaths on the frieze. Above the shop, there are two sashes on each floor; the first floor has 16-pane sashes, while the second floor has 12-pane sashes. The lower part of the building adjoining to the rear is not of interest.
