Description

Nairne Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century, a refronting in the early 19th century, and further changes in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with brick infill on the first floor at the rear; the right gable is partially rendered and color-washed, while the rest is made of flint with brick dressings. It has a tiled roof and a large 17th-century external chimney on the right side, which has a lower section made of flint and brick, and an upper section of brick in English bond with two diagonal brick shafts. There is also a later brick chimney at the rear.

The house is two storeys tall and has a 20th-century five-bay window arrangement. The ground floor features paired wooden casements with segmental heads, while the first floor has wooden cross casements. The central door, which is from the 20th century, has a flat wooden hood above it. At the rear of the left bay, there is a brick lean-to that dates from the 19th to 20th century.

Inside, the cottage consists of three bays with timber framing in the cross walls. The truss between the left bays has well-crafted curved braces and likely was open over the center of the 16th-century hall. The truss between the right bays is closed. The right bay includes a stop-chamfered spine beam and a very heavy stop-chamfered fireplace lintel.
